Acupuncture

Although referred to by many as an “alternative” practice, acupuncture is a well-established form of traditional Chinese medicine that is known to not only alleviate pain, but also enhance health and wellness. During an acupuncture session, small sterile needles are gently applied to specific points on the body (which vary from person to person) to regulate the flow of the body’s energy (or qi).

Acupuncture is a particularly popular and inspiring option for people who prefer to improve the health of their bodies and/or minds without immediately relying on surgery or prescription drugs. This practice has helped our clients achieve relief and improvement in a variety of areas, including but not limited to:

  • Anxiety/stress
  • Circulation
  • Mood/behavior issues
  • Fertility
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Food addiction
  • Neck/back pain/injuries

Acupuncture FAQS

Will my insurance cover acupuncture?

Many insurances do cover acupuncture due to its popularity and effectiveness in treating a variety of health issues. Some insurances that cover acupuncture are Aetna, Medicare, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Cigna, and more. Insurance coverage varies according to each individual. To find out if your insurance covers acupuncture, contact our office.

Yes, there are many psycho-emotional factors that acupuncture can help with. Some of these include anxiety, stress, depression, PTSD, sexual abuse trauma, insomnia, ADHD/concentration, mental clarity, and headaches/migraines. The endorphins released during treatment work to balance the energy in the body to relax and heal body or psychological trauma.

There are very minor possible side effects to acupuncture. Some common side effects may include soreness in the area of needle insertion, temporary fatigue, and brief muscle twitching.

Acupuncture is not a painful process. The needles are so small, and most patients do not even feel them. Once they have been fully inserted, some patients feel a painless, warm tingling sensation.

Acupuncture is cumulative, therefore we recommend receiving consistent treatments 2-3 times a week for multiple weeks to see permanent long-lasting results. Most patients only experience temporary results from receiving one session, although some of our patients have expressed their issues were resolved after just one treatment.

It is recommended that you wear loose fitting clothing that can be easily moved to reach the area of treatment. Once you arrive, you can expect some questions about your overall health, lifestyle, and goals with acupuncture. It is important to be honest so that the acupuncturist can treat you according to your unique symptoms. Your appointment can last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and most patients describe their experience as very relaxing. After your session, it is important to drink water to hydrate and combat any lightheadedness.

Acupuncture works to stimulate the body’s natural painkillers through increased blood flow to muscles, nerves, and connective tissue. It can be successful in treating chronic pain by penetrating the skin and creating micro-traumas which send healing signals from the brain to the affected area. This can also be an effective treatment for injuries by speeding up the recovery process and promoting the flow of blood and fluids to the injury.

Acupuncture can be successful in treating gastrointestinal issues by calming the nervous system and bringing the gut back to normal function. This reduces inflammation and restores acid production back to regular levels to relieve most gastrointestinal related symptoms such as bloating, nausea, constipation, heartburn, IBS, and more.
