Massage Therapy Q & A

What Types of Massage Therapy are Available?

At Total Health, the team offers the following types of massages, tailored to your unique needs.

  • Swedish Massage: Swedish massage is characterized by long, flowing strokes and kneading, shaking, and tapping motions. This is generally regarded as traditional massage and can improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and relax the body and mind.
  • Deep Tissue Massage: Deep tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage, though the pressure is deeper. Deep tissue massage is best for chronic muscle tension and can help with neck pain, back pain, and sciatica.
  • Prenatal Massage: Prenatal massages are tailored to the specific needs of a pregnant woman with a pressure that is safe for both mother and baby. Prenatal massages help relieve back pain and muscle tension associated with postural changes during pregnancy.
  • Medical Massage: Medical massage is a technique used to improve circulation, reduce pain, and decrease inflammation in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Medical massage can be beneficial for fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune diseases, and chronic pain.
  • Sports Massage: Sports massage incorporates attributes of Swedish and deep tissue massage in order to prepare for an athletic event or recover afterward. Sports massage can also be part of your self-care regimen if you exercise regularly.

What are the Benefits of Massage Therapy?

In addition to stress relief and decreased muscle tension, massage therapy can also help with:

  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Postoperative pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sports injuries
  • Arthritis pain
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Migraines

Your massage therapist uses a variety of massage strokes and movements to relax tight muscles and provide relaxation and pain relief where you need it most.

What Can I Expect During a Massage Therapy Session?

During your massage therapy session, you’ll first meet with your massage therapist to explain your trouble spots or areas of pain. When your massage therapist leaves the room, you’ll undress to your level of comfort – leaving your undergarments on – and lie under the sheets and blankets on the massage table.

Your massage therapist returns to the room to make sure you’re comfortable and starts your massage. Your therapist may begin with a light touch on your skin to assess areas of tension, discomfort, and tenderness before applying a massage oil or lotion.

Then, your therapist starts your massage, working through all of the areas of concern as you relax. Massage sessions last 60 minutes from beginning to end. Afterward, your therapist leaves the room so you can get dressed.
