Neuropathy Treatment Q & A

What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy – also called peripheral neuropathy – is a condition that affects the nerves in your peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is responsible for touch, pressure, pain, and hot and cold sensations in the feet, legs, hands, and arms.

With peripheral neuropathy, the nerves in your extremities don’t function properly. This can cause:

  • Pain
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Pins and needles or stabbing sensation
  • Weakness in the legs and feet
  • Loss of coordination
  • Loss of reflexes
  • Burning sensation

Neuropathy symptoms occur when the peripheral nerves are injured or damaged. The symptoms can become chronic or permanent without proper care from the team at Total Health.

What Causes Neuropathy?

There are a number of causes of neuropathy, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Vascular disorders
  • Certain medications
  • Infections
  • Trauma
  • Autoimmune conditions, including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Alcoholism

In some cases, neuropathy can be inherited. Overall, diabetes causes 60% of neuropathy cases and is the primary cause of permanent nerve damage in the feet. Regular foot care and neuropathy treatment can reduce your risk of falls and injuries to your feet.

How is Neuropathy Treated?

At Total Health, the team offers comprehensive care for neuropathy that includes Neurolumen® treatments, deep tissue laser, acupuncture, physical therapy and rehabilitation, massage, and chiropractic care. Used together or separately, these treatments can reduce your symptoms and improve your overall comfort.

  • Neurolumen: The Neurolumen device combines laser, LED, and electrostimulation to relieve pain, improve circulation, and regenerate nerve tissue. It is the primary treatment option since it combines multiple styles of treatment for maximum benefit.
  • Class IV Deep Tissue Laser Therapy: A class IV deep tissue laser is a pain-free, noninvasive treatment to promote healing and reduce inflammation.
  • Acupuncture: Acupuncture can improve energy flow and release endorphins that support healing and pain relief.
  • Physical Therapy: Physical therapy exercises can improve balance and coordination to improve the function of affected muscles.
  • Massage Therapy: Massage therapy can reduce swelling and pain while improving circulation to the affected area.
  • Chiropractic Care: Specific chiropractic adjustments can reduce irritation of the nerves causing your neuropathy symptoms to relieve pain and inflammation.

Depending on your symptoms and the severity of your condition, the team develops a plan to help you regain lost mobility, improve your balance and muscle strength, and experience less pain and discomfort from neuropathy.
