What Happens During a Pain Management Visit?

During your visit for pain management, you’ll meet with your doctor to discuss your condition, symptoms, and medical history. If you don’t yet have a diagnosis or know the cause of your pain, your doctor performs a complete physical exam including orthopedic and neurological testing, to determine your diagnosis. X-rays can be performed in the office or you’ll be referred to an imaging center for an MRI if needed.

Based on your diagnosis, your doctor recommends a pain management plan to help you get out of pain as quickly as possible. You may begin with injection therapy — including joint injections, sacroiliac injections, trigger point injections, and epidurals or more advanced injections if needed.

Other passive therapy options include electrical stimulation, deep tissue laser therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, or massage. These can be combined with injections or physical therapy, depending on your condition and pain level.

As your pain level decreases, the team incorporates more active therapies – including physical therapy and rehabilitation – to improve your physical abilities, strengthen your muscles, and support your overall health. The team may also recommend activities you can do at home to speed up your recovery.

Once you’ve recovered from your pain, the team can provide long-term support and solutions for you through education and checkups, if desired.
