Varicose Veins

About Varicose Veins

Varicose veins occur when veins in the legs become enlarged and engorged with blood as a result of weakened valves and veins. The result is visible dark blue or purple veins that appear mangled or bulging. In many cases, varicose veins are purely a cosmetic concern although they can be painful and when left untreated, may lead to serious complications. Varicose vein pain can come in many forms including heaviness, burning, throbbing and cramping. Treatment can eliminate the pain and risk of complications, as well as any cosmetic concerns. To determine which method of treatment will be most beneficial, individual aspects of the condition, such as the severity and overall health of the patient, must first be evaluated.

Possible Symptoms of Varicose Veins

The most prominent symptom of varicose veins is the appearance of swollen, twisted or otherwise malformed veins in the leg. These veins range in color from blue to dark purple, though the particular shade and size may change over time. The pain associated with varicose veins is frequently inconsistent and may consist of heaviness, burning, throbbing and cramping in the affected leg. Other discomforts may also include itching, swelling or bleeding.

Diagnosing Varicose Veins

You may be able to diagnose varicose veins on your own if you are familiar with their appearance. Otherwise, your healthcare provider will be able to make a diagnosis after a physical examination. Depending on your medical background, testing, such as Ultrasound, for disease or underlying conditions may also be conducted upon diagnosis.

Treatment Options

ClosureFast™

The use of radiofrequency energy to treat varicose vein pain is a non-invasive, outpatient procedure that eliminates the risks and lengthy healing period associated with surgical treatments.

VenaSeal™

This technique is ideal for treating varicose veins that are located closely under the skin. By inserting a catheter into the vein and injecting a minuscule amount of medical grade adhesive, the vein becomes sealed. This process then allows all of the pooled up blood from the varicose vein to travel to healthier veins.

Sclerotherapy

This treatment option is a simple procedure that involves receiving a small injection of salt solution directly into the varicose vein. This damages the inner lining of the vein, causing clot and the vein eventually fades. It is highly effective in reducing and eliminating varicose veins.
